The Washington Commanders knew they had a tough decision pending on former second overall pick Chase Young.

They had to decide what to do with his fifth-year option.

If they picked it up, he would be paid north of $17 million next season.

If not, Young would be set to hit free agency after the year.

According to Nick Jhabvala, the Commanders have decided to not pick up Young’s fifth-year option.

This comes as a surprise to many due to where Young was selected.

He was a slam-dunk No. 2 overall pick, but due to a plethora of injuries, he has never reached his potential.

Over the past two seasons, Young has played a total of 12 games.

Even though he was Defensive Rookie of the Year his first season, the Commanders are not willing to risk paying him the $17 million next year.

Now in a contract year, it will be interesting to see how Young responds.

If he can stay healthy, there is no question he can make himself a lot of money this year.

Plus, the former Ohio State Buckeye just turned 24 years old.

The talent has never been the question for Young, it is just getting on the field.

Washington does not believe in Young as a cornerstone of their franchise.

But he has not even entered the prime of his career yet.

Young could still be in line for a massive payday if he can just stay on the field for close to a full season.
