The New York Yankees are in last place in the AL East division.

Yes, the day has come: at 15-14, they are tied in fifth and last place with the Boston Red Sox as of Monday afternoon.

New York has dropped three consecutive games and hold a run differential of +2, the worst in the division.

In other words, their record and run differential tell the story of a mediocre squad.

Yes, the Yankees have suffered a lot of injuries: Giancarlo Stanton, Harrison Bader, Aaron Judge, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, Frankie Montas, Jonathan Loaisiga, Lou Trivino, Scott Effross and other key contributors are currently out of action.

However, championship-caliber teams can find viable alternatives.

The Yankees haven’t been able to do that, particularly on offense.

Here is what they are sending day in and day out:

“From Oswaldo Cabrera, Aaron Hicks, Willie Calhoun, Franchy Cordero, and IKF, the Yankees have gotten putrid production: .189 AVG, .230 OBP, .267 SLG, 36 wRC+, 23.6% K%, 5.2% BB%, -1.7 fWAR. Sustainable or not, this is how you end up tied for last in the AL East,” Fireside Yankees tweeted.

Those numbers are horrible, and compromise the team’s winning chances every game.

That doesn’t even include the struggling Oswald Peraza.

Like Cabrera, he was going to be part of the young movement anyway.

Hicks, Calhoun, Cordero, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (IKF) are a direct consequence of the team’s lack of planning and vision.

If we add Jose Trevino’s light-hitting ways (he is a superb defensive catcher but a below-average batter) the Yankees offense lacks punch from the fifth hitter through the ninth.

Add Stanton and Judge’s injuries, and you get a mediocre offense incapable of consistently scoring runs.
