Being a general manager in the National Football League isn’t for everybody.
You have to be strong and firm about your decisions, knowing thousands of people may not agree with you.
With that in mind, former NFL executive Scott Pioli recently explained how NFL teams make draft-related decisions.
Pioli explained that most of the time a pick feels like a reach because the team has intel about someone else wanting to snatch that player from them.

Other times, it’s all because of the system.
Pioli pointed out the fact that teams value players differently because of how they would fit into their system, thus making some seemingly lesser prospects better suited for them instead.
Of course, NFL fans will most likely never be rational about their team.
They will always feel like they know what’s best for their team and are confident they would do a better job of running a football team than the guys who are actually in charge.
Needless to say, that’s nowhere near the case.
People often want their team to go with a “best player available” approach or follow what draft experts believe should be the logical order, regardless of the fit and how the roster is built.
That approach has proven to be effective from time to time, but there are way too many ways of putting together a Super Bowl-winning roster.
And, just like Pioli pointed out, maybe being an NFL executive or coach isn’t the best line of work for you if you’re not able to deal with criticism.
