The San Antonio Spurs have finally found someone to carry Tim Duncan’s torch.
They won the 2023 NBA draft lottery to land Victor Wembanyama with the No.1 pick, and it seemed like it was a match made in heaven.
That’s why Spurs legend Tony Parker posted a picture of a younger Wembanyama wearing his No. 9 jersey, suggesting that the star prospect grew up rooting for the very same team he’s about to play for.

Notably, Wembanyama also told Brian Windhorst of ESPN that he thought half of France was rooting for the Spurs to get the pick, as they’ve always had a strong presence in that country because of Parker and Boris Diaw.
The Spurs have had a plethora of international talent on their roster, with Gregg Popovich always digging deep into the worldwide basketball scene to find hidden gems, including Manu Ginobili and the aforementioned Parker.
Wembanyama is no hidden gem at all, as NBA scouts have been closely following his — huge — steps since he made his debut for the national youth team, and he’s been the consensus No. 1 prospect for the better part of the past couple of years.
Scouts believe he’s the most singular prospect in the history of the Association, with some going as far as to state that he’s got GOAT potential despite never setting foot on NBA hardwood.
And while we shouldn’t rush or get ahead of ourselves when talking about a kid, there’s no denying that the fit in San Antonio was perfect.
