The San Antonio Spurs had a franchise-changing moment on Tuesday night.

That is because they won the NBA Draft Lottery and now hold the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

While winning the lottery is always significant, it has more meaning this year.

That is because one of the top draft prospects in recent memory can be selected.

French basketball star Victor Wembanyama is who many are calling the next big thing in the NBA.

Colin Cowherd seems to think the Spurs getting the first pick is an excellent spot for Wembanyama.

Cowherd mentioned how the Spurs are “grown-ups” and they know how to handle star players.

For a long-time, the Spurs were one of the best franchises in basketball.

They were consistent championship contenders and even won five times from 1998-2014.

Their dynasty started when they selected Tim Duncan first overall.

That was the last time the Spurs had the first overall pick.

Also, the Spurs are known for being an international team.

Outside of Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili were major parts of their success.

Parker is the greatest French basketball player of all-time.

Now, Wembanyama will get to follow in his shoes as a member of the Spurs.

There is no question Wembanyama will be the first overall pick.

He will immediately increase ticket and jersey sales for the team as all eyes will be on San Antonio next season.

Sometimes it pays to tank.

That is what the Spurs did and they got rewarded with the opportunity to draft a once-in-a-generation player.
