The Pittsburgh Steelers have their quarterback of the future in 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett.
He showed enough at the end of last season for the Steelers to feel good about him moving forward.
But, it would still make sense for the Steelers to have a veteran backup just in case.
That is why they will be extending Mitch Trubisky to a new contract.
According to Ian Rapoport, Trubisky has agreed to a two-year extension that will lower his cap number for next year.
Details: It’s a 2-year extension for Mitch Trubisky that also lowers the QB’s cap number for the 2023 season (previously $10M). The two sides have agreed, as Omar Khan said on @PatMcAfeeShow.

Trubisky showed last season that he is no longer a starting-caliber quarterback.
But, he can carve out a nice role as a backup and that’s what the Steelers hope he can become.
Some fans are happy to have him back as the backup QB.

The Steelers are one of the most interesting teams in the league heading into next year.
Their roster is not as good as the rest of their division, but they always find ways to win.
Pittsburgh has not had a losing season since 2003.
With Pickett getting a full offseason to prepare as the starter, the Steelers may be able to surprise some people.
Yet, not every fan believes Pickett is the QB of the future.

Pittsburgh may have to be led by their stout defense once again next season.
That side of the ball has kept them afloat after many years of poor offensive production.
No one seems to know what the ceiling could be for Pickett.
But, the Steelers have plenty of good offensive players in place to help him reach his potential.
