When the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, it appeared that a new era had begun.

Pickett did encounter a few growing pains in his first NFL season, which could be a concern.

He is the presumed starter for 2023 but could have a shorter leash than last year if the Steelers’ recent move is any indication.

The team recently announced that they signed Mitchell Trubisky to a three-year contract.

Trubisky’s NFL career has been up and down thus far.

He was drafted second overall by the Chicago Bears in 2017, a move that has since been highly scrutinized.

After spending four years with the Bears, he made his way to Buffalo, making six appearances for the Bills.

Last year, he started five games for the Steelers, in which the team had a 2-3 record.

It appears that the organization liked what they saw from Trubisky last season, and are willing to keep him around for three more years.

If for no other reason, Trubisky can serve as a high-functioning backup quarterback for a second-year player.

However, if Pickett struggles early on in the season, Trubisky’s number could be called again, giving him another shot.

Despite the Steelers having a winning record in 2022, they ultimately missed the playoffs.

The AFC North has continued to get more difficult, given the recent rise of the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens.

Will the Steelers be able to keep up, with their combination of Pickett and Trubisky at quarterback?
