The NFL wants to do the best it can to make the games as competitive as possible.

No one wants to see a team play shorthanded, especially at the most important position.

That is exactly what happened between the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

The 49ers ran out of playable quarterbacks after Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury and backup Josh Johnson suffered a concussion.

What was supposed to be a competitive game ended up being a blowout as the 49ers could not throw the ball all second half.

To avoid something like this happening again, the NFL has instituted a new rule.

According to Ari Meirov, the NFL owners passed a rule allowing teams to have a third quarterback in uniform.

This extra quarterback would be the 47th active player on gamedays.

We have seen quarterback injuries become a common occurrence in recent years.

Each season there are a few starters that miss a significant amount of time.

This extra quarterback will at least gives teams a fallback plan if both of their starters get hurt.

The NFC Championship Game was the only time where we saw a team run out of quarterbacks.

For it to happen in one of the biggest games of the year was unfortunate.

It was smart of the NFL owners to address this rare issue and fix it from ever happening again.

It will be interesting to see if this rule ends up playing a significant role in any games this upcoming season.
