New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is one of MLB’s premier power hitters.
Four seasons of elite performance before the 2023 season prove it, and that performance has carried over to the current campaign.
He hit his 18th home run of the year on Tuesday night in the Mets’ loss to the Chicago Cubs.
That number comfortably leads the league, as the second-ranked player has 15.
It’s safe to say Alonso is on an impressive power pace.

That pace, as you can see, helped him make franchise history.
Not even in his rookie season, when he finished with 53 round-trippers (a record for a first-year player), did he have the power pace he is showing in 2023.
In 579 career games, the “Polar Bear” has 164 home runs, which is really, really impressive.
His lowest output in a full, 162-game season has been 37.
Batting average, on the other hand, has been an issue, but with the kind of power he displays, it hardly even matters.
He is slashing, as of Wednesday afternoon, .230/.325/.541 with an .866 OPS.
As long as he keeps being a surefire 40-homer hitter, the Mets probably won’t care too much about his average unless it drops to the low-.200s range.
He is rapidly approaching extension territory, as he has four years of service time and will hit free agency after the conclusion of the 2024 campaign.
With their deep pockets, the Mets are widely expected to secure a deal with the fan favorite eventually.
