Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles have set a new standard for what a franchise quarterback contract should look like.
Hurts signed a record-breaking deal, a five-year contract extension worth $255 million with a whopping $179 million in guarantees and a no-trade clause, the first contract of that kind in franchise history.
Not only does that bode an issue for Lamar Jackson’s contract standoff with the Baltimore Ravens, but it also puts plenty of pressure on both the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Chargers to do the same with Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert, respectively.
When it comes to the latter, however, it seems like HC Brandon Staley doesn’t want to reveal his hand too soon, as he recently claimed that there won’t be any updates on the matter, and the team will handle that business privately.
As for the Herbert contract extension, Staley said: “No updates. We’re going to keep those negotiations private.”

Notably, that was pretty similar to what GM Howie Roseman and Hurts’ camp said of his deal, stating that it would figure itself out and the news would break eventually.
Hurts is coming off an MVP-caliber season and a trip to the Super Bowl, so Herbert might not get that much, regardless of how proficient he’s been since entering the league.
As for Burrow, he might as well set an even bigger mark after such an impressive start to his career, so don’t be shocked if this now-impressive deal winds up looking like a bit of a bargain a couple of years from now, just like it happened with Patrick Mahomes’ 10-year contract extension from a couple of seasons ago.
