49ers QB Speaks Out Pre-Draft Trade Rumors

All of a sudden, there have been rumors springing up over the last few days that the San Francisco 49ers may trade quarterback Trey Lance.

They have reportedly been fielding calls about the former No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, although there is no indication if they’re seriously interested in letting go of him.

Lance seemed to deflect the rumors when asked about them during a visit to his alma mater, North Dakota State University.

“I got no comment on that,” Lance said. “I have no information.”

Reportedly, the 49ers haven’t initiated any of these trade discussions.

As of now, Lance is their starting quarterback, as Brock Purdy is recovering from surgery on a torn UCL in his throwing elbow he suffered during the team’s loss in the NFC Championship Game.

It is possible, perhaps even likely, that Purdy won’t be ready for Week 1 of the 2023 season, which will give Lance an opportunity to show he is a much better quarterback than he was in his first two seasons.

He began 2022 as the starter, but a serious ankle injury in Week 2 prematurely ended his season before he could provide a good sample space of who he had become in his sophomore season.

Thus far, he has played just eight games in the NFL after having just over a season of college football, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has made it nearly impossible to fully judge how good he will realistically become, although many feel he has lots of potential and a high ceiling.

But potential has a shelf life, and not many achieve their full potential.
