Princess Kate has a wide selection of headpieces, but Princess Diana’s Lover’s Knot Tiara commands attention every time she wears it.
The sparkler, which features dozens of diamonds and 19 hanging pearls, is more than 100 years old. It was originally made by Garrand for Queen Mary in 1914 and was then passed down to Queen Elizabeth II, who lent the tiara to her late daughter-in-law, Diana. It was reportedly one of Diana’s favorite pieces to wear.
Kate was first spotted wearing the gorgeous accessory in 2015 at the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace. For the event, the Princess of Wales sported an elegant lace dress, dangly diamond earrings and wore her hair in a glamorous updo.
Three years later, Kate once again made headlines for wearing her late mother-in-law’s go-to accessory. Princess Diana died at age 36 in 1997.
For the December 2018 Diplomatic Corps evening reception, Kate looked radiant in a Jenny Packham gown. The garb featured short sleeves, a fitted bodice with sequin embellishments, flowy skirt and sparkly belt. She added a pop of color to her outfit with a yellow ribbon pin attached with a portrait of the queen. For accessories, the mom of three rocked a diamond bracelet and matching clutch.
At the same event the following year, Kate dazzled Us in the breathtaking tiara and same pin. She teamed the magnificent head ornament with a black dress by Alexander McQueen. The stylish number included long sleeves, a V-neck, pointed shoulders and a floor-length skirt. For jewelry, Kate sported diamond rings, earrings and a vintage Cartier necklace. The piece was given to Elizabeth from the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1947 as a wedding gift for her marriage to Prince Phillip. It features a platinum set and approximately 300 diamonds. The queen died in September 2022 at the age 96, one year after Phillip’s passing at age 99 in April 2021.
Princess Kate was most recently seen in the jeweled piece in November 2022, at one of her first appearances since Elizabeth’s death. For the first State Banquet of King Charles III’s reign, which took place at Buckingham Palace, Kate paired the Lover’s Knot Tiara with a Jenny Packham frock. The elegant gown featured sparkly details at her shoulder, as well as a scoop neckline and bell sleeves that cascaded to the floor. To add even more glitz to the look, the St Andrews University alum honored her late grandmother-in-law by wearing a bracelet that belonged to Queen Elizabeth. Kate also paid tribute to Princess Diana by adding the late royal’s diamond and South Sea Pearl earrings to the ensemble. She stood next to husband Prince William, who is Princess Diana’s son. For his part, he sported a black tuxedo and white bowtie.
