The 2023 season has not gone according to plan thus far for the St. Louis Cardinals.
After being heavily favored to win the NL Central, the team is off to a 7-11 start.
They sit at the bottom of the division and are now six games back of first place.
But they may be getting some help soon.
Veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright is set to make his first rehab start with Double-A Springfield.
He began the 2023 season on the injured list due to a groin injury.
On Twitter, John Denton of MLB.com provided the latest update on the 41-year-old and what the plan is for him.
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said RHP Adam Wainwright will make two rehab starts with the @Sgf_Cardinals — today at 12:05 PM & five days later. He will throw 55-60 pitches today & approximately 75 in the second start. Then, he will be evaluated & likely return to the MLB club.

Wainwright is expected to throw 55-60 pitches on Wednesday and will make another rehab start five days later.
In that start, his target will be roughly 75 pitches.
After his second start, the two-time World Series champion will be evaluated further and will likely rejoin the Cardinals.
Last season, Wainwright won 11 games and posted a respectable 3.71 ERA in 32 starts, only missing one start due to a bout with COVID.
A bad September took him out of the Cardinals rotation for the postseason.
Wainwright had said that his struggles were caused by a come-backer that hit him in the knee in a start against the Atlanta Braves.
He pitched for Team USA during the World Baseball Classic and suffered his groin injury in the weight room before the championship game.
He made two starts in the Classic and allowed just one run over four innings in both of them.
