The St. Louis Cardinals haven’t had the best season to date, as they sit at 17-26, nine games below the .500 mark and at the bottom of the National League.

Injuries haven’t been too big of an issue so far, but the Cardinals’ hands have been forced with a recent injury situation.

On Sunday night, outfielder Dylan Carlson sprained his ankle at Fenway Park.

As a result, the promising young outfielder has not been in the lineup for the past two games.

According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals are likely to place him on the injured list.

In a corresponding move, St. Louis has recalled former outfield prospect Oscar Mercado.

Mercado was selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

He was in the organization until he was traded at the 2018 trade deadline.

One year later, the young outfielder made his Major League debut with the Cleveland Guardians.

He hit for a .269 average and popped 15 home runs in his rookie season.

However, Mercado began to taper off after a strong rookie season.

The Guardians ultimately designated him for assignment last season.

Mercado was briefly picked up by the Philadelphia Phillies, but only appeared in one game before eventually returning to the Guardians.

Mercado is one of many promising young outfielders in the Cardinals minor league system.

With Tyler O’Neill set to go on a rehab assignment soon, it’s very possible that Mercado’s stint with the Major League club may be short lived, but nonetheless, he’ll get an opportunity with St. Louis.
