The New England Patriots are hoping to be much more competitive in 2023.
After a rough season that saw them finish 8-9, missing the playoffs is not something the Patriots plan to have happen again.
One reason for optimism within the Patriots is that they have a new offensive coordinator.
Last season Matt Patricia called plays in New England and that was a disaster.
Former Patriots coach Bill O’Brien will take over calling the plays this season.
Having a coach with play-calling experience should help quarterback Mac Jones.
This is a huge season ahead for Jones as he needs to show he can be a franchise quarterback.
New England has struggled to have any type of offensive consistency since Tom Brady left.
O’Brien worked closely with Brady from 2009-2011 and he should be able to give Jones similar tutelage.
According to Pro Football Talk, Jones is “excited” about the opportunity to work with O’Brien.
“I think we’re all excited for this next year, and it just starts with putting your head down and going to work,” Jones said, via Boston.com

This has to be the year Jones takes a major step, if not he may be looking for a new team next offseason.
Bill Belichick will not stick with Jones if he can not win with him.
Last season, Jones had 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 14 games.
That is not going to cut it in 2023.
The new-look Patriots offense is hoping to surprise some people next season.
At the very least, Jones should be able to reach his potential.
