This past offseason, the story of the free agent market was the fact that four premier shortstops were available.

Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa, and Dansby Swanson were the four shortstops out on the market.

All but Correa signed with different teams during the winter months.

With the 2023 MLB season now in full swing, insider Jon Heyman appeared on MLB Now to discuss the deals the free-agent shortstops signed over the winter and how they’re holding up two months into the new season.

The video of Heyman’s discussion with Brian Kenny can be found in the tweet below.

Heyman gave his take on the new deals and stated that sometimes it takes a player a little bit of time to heat up after signing a massive contract.

A graphic then showed the amount of money and number of years each shortstop signed for and their OPS+ marks.

Swanson has the highest OPS+ mark at 117.

Heyman said he believes that Bogaerts is performing well and has lived up to his contract so far.

He also stated that Turner should eventually heat up, but that Correa has been somewhat of a disappointment thus far.

Correa’s OPS+ sits at a mere 90 as of now.

However, Heyman stated that he believes things will ultimately pan out for Correa in his new contract with the Minnesota Twins.

Kenny then chimed in and asked Heyman if he believed teams would regret these contracts down the road.

Heyman responded by saying that it’s possible, as each of these contracts will take their respective shortstops into their 40s.
