The Cincinnati Reds made a key move late on Tuesday when they signed young right-hander Hunter Greene to a six-year, $53 million contract extension.
The contract also includes an option for a seventh year.
Greene owns a 4.24 ERA in his first four starts and has struck out 24 batters over 17 innings of work and owns a 1.53 WHIP.
The 23-year-old made his MLB debut last season after cracking the team’s Opening Day rotation.
He went 5-13 with a 4.44 ERA in 24 starts and managed to throw a complete game.
On Twitter, MLB.com writer Mark Feinsand revealed some key details about Greene’s new contract with the Reds.
Here’s the breakdown of Hunter Greene’s extension, per source:
$2 million signing bonus
2023: $1 million
2024: $3 million
2025: $6 million
2026: $8 million
2027: $15 million
2028: $16 million
2029: $21 million club option; $2 million buyout— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) April 18, 2023
Greene will receive a $2 million signing bonus and will be making $3 million in 2024, $6 million in 2025, $8 million in 2026, $15 million in 2027, and $16 million in 2028.
The club option for 2029 is worth $21 million.
It also includes a $2 million buyout if not exercised.
This appears to be an affordable deal for a small-market team such as the Reds.
They have extended their young hard-throwing right-hander and have kept him at a good price as well.
Greene has not yet recorded a decision in his first four starts this year.
This season, he will receive $1 million.
The Reds are 7-10 and sit in fourth place in the National League Central division, 5.5 games back of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.
Greene is a key piece for the Reds future and is somebody that the organization is looking towards to help usher in the next era of Reds baseball.
The Reds lost 100 games last season and fell short of the postseason.
