The San Diego Padres have been the top sports attraction in town ever since the Chargers moved.
Well, the sports scene in San Diego just got a whole lot bigger with the addition of the newest MLS team.
Major League Soccer has announced that a 30th team will be coming to San Diego.
They are set to make their debut in 2025.
One interesting aspect of this new team is the minority ownership.
According to Bob Nightengale, Padres third baseman Manny Machado will be one of the minority owners of the new club.
San Diego #Padres All-Star 3B Manny Machado will be a minority owner in San Diego’s new MLS expansion franchise that begins play in 2025.

Machado recently signed a new contract that will keep him in San Diego until he turns 41 years old.
The All-Star has embraced San Diego ever since he signed with them back in 2019.
So it makes complete sense for him to be a part of another pro sports team in the same city.
It will be interesting to see how many new fans the MLS will get because of this move.
Expanding to a new city should give the league a chance to reach fans that were not interested in soccer before.
Also, we have seen in other cities where pros teams can feed off one another, like in Philadelphia where the Phillies, Eagles, and Union all made their respective championships.
Many San Diego fans are hoping for similar results from their teams.
California plays a big role in MLS, as there are already three MLS teams in that state.
Now the San Diego team will make it four and a hotbed for professional soccer.
