Heading into the NFL offseason, the New York Giants had two big decisions to make.

With the contracts of both Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones up in the air, the Giants signed Jones to a large contract extension.

This left them with no choice but to franchise tag Barkley, keeping him on the books for another season.

While many saw this as an opportunity for both sides to negotiate more, a recent update has changed that tune.

According to Adam Schefter’s update, Barkley will not be signing the franchise tag before April 17, which is when the team’s offseason programming begins.

As Schefter indicates, this means that Barkley cannot participate in team activities while this agreement remains unsigned.

This means that the two sides will likely need to come to a new agreement in the form of a contract extension.

Otherwise, Barkley may do his best Le’Veon Bell impression and sit out for either part or all of the 2023 season.

The Giants experienced growth as a team in 2022, making it to the playoffs, and winning their Wild Card game.

They were planning to enter next season with Barkley on the roster, but this could throw a wrench in their plans.

Whether this will be resolved quickly remains to be seen.

Given Barkley’s career history, the Giants may want to act fast before something drastic happens.

This is a developing story, one that is likely to have several updates in the coming days.

Stay tuned, for what should amount to a drama-filled story.
