It is early in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and they could only be starting their search for their next franchise quarterback.

Kenny Pickett, who was a rookie last season, will continue to start under center, but they do have a very capable backup in Mitch Trubisky.

Trubisky just received a two-year extension from Pittsburgh, and NFL insider Ian Rapoport broke down the details of that new deal.

The extension will keep Trubisky under contract through the 2025 campaign.

Last season, he started five games, which included the first four games of the year before Pickett was promoted to QB1, and overall, he completed 65.0 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Trubisky, the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears, where he had some modest success.

After a rookie season in which he threw as many interceptions as touchdowns, he notched 3,223 passing yards and 24 passing touchdowns plus 421 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, which earned him a Pro Bowl nod.

The Steelers appear to have excellent depth at the wide receiver position with Diontae Johnson, young stud George Pickens, and grizzled vet Allen Robinson II.

On the other side of the football, they feature pass rusher T.J. Watt, All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, and defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, as well as new cornerback Patrick Peterson, an eight-time Pro Bowler.

The Steelers are hoping they will surprise people and make the playoffs this coming season.
