When he retired from the NFL in 2003, Shannon Sharpe was regarded as one of, if not the best tight end in NFL history.
Sharpe was the first of his kind at the position, becoming more of a receiving threat, rather than a blocker.
In a recent episode of Jason and Travis Kelce’s podcast, New Heights, Sharpe revealed how his career as a pass catcher began.
“The funny thing about the system we were in,” said Sharpe, “they put me in motion, so John (Elway) could tell me the route.”

When Sharpe started as an NFL tight end, he had limited experience with route running.
As a result, as he indicates in this video, John Elway needed to coach him on the field, letting him know what route he needed to run.
While he needed to put a large amount of work in to succeed, things seemed to pan out for Sharpe.
He established himself as a premier tight end, both by catching passes, and blocking effectively as well.
His success revolutionized the tight-end position, as many other pass-catchers have emerged.
Travis Kelce has become one of Sharpe’s mentees, as is revealed throughout this podcast episode.
Throughout his career, Kelce has received wisdom and guidance from Sharpe, who continues to help and show him the ways to succeed.
As a result, Kelce has also become one of the most highly regarded tight ends in NFL history.
Sharpe has revealed that either Kelce or Rob Gronkowski are his picks as the best tight end to ever play in the NFL.
Will Kelce be able to break any more of Sharpe’s records in the upcoming seasons?
