On Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The team had lost the first two games of the series and fallen to 7-11 on the season, dropping to last place in the NL Central and six games out of first.

However, they got a visit from a fan favorite and team legend.

Mike Shannon, who played nine seasons as a member of the Cardinals and won two World Series titles and later became a broadcaster, was in the house on Wednesday.

The 83-year-old worked as a radio announcer for the Cardinals from 1972-2021 and was on hand for several great moments in the team’s history.

On Twitter, Bally Sports Midwest posted a photo of Shannon in the stands at Busch Stadium.

Shannon began his career as the color commentator on KMOX, the Cardinals’ local radio station.

He served alongside the great Jack Buck and ultimately took over as the play-by-play announcer after Buck’s retirement.

Shannon was behind the mic for the Cardinals’ World Series titles in 2006 and 2011 and called several great moments, including David Freese‘s walk-off home run in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series.

The Missouri native was joined by John Rooney in 2006 and the two served as the Cardinals radio duo from then until Shannon’s retirement after the 2021 season.

He was famous for his iconic home run call.

Whenever a Cardinals player hit a home run, Shannon would shout “Get up baby!”

As a player, Shannon posted a 7.8 WAR and hit a total of 68 home runs during his nine-year career, while hitting for a .255 average.
