The Chiefs Are Keeping All Their Key Pieces Intact

The Kansas City Chiefs are keeping the band together for their title defense.

According to Field Yates, they’ve reached an agreement to bring back punter Tommy Townsend, one of the best in the game.

The University of Florida product had been tendered as a restricted free agent, so this doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

Townsend joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2020, and he’s yet to miss a single game ever since.

He’s been a crucial part of the team’s recent success, even helping them reach two Super Bowls in the meantime.

As of now, the terms of the agreement are undisclosed, but his low tender offer was worth roughly $2.6 million for the upcoming season.

Notably, the Chiefs would’ve gotten no draft compensation if he had chosen to sign with any other team, although both parties were always interested in reaching an agreement.

Townsend is coming off a Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro season in 2022, and he might as well become the league’s highest earner at his position if he decides to pursue a bigger payday after the 2023 campaign.

Moreover, this move won’t have any sort of effect on the team’s salary cap, as the deal had already counted against the cap as soon as he was tendered.

The Chiefs have nearly $5 million in cap space and roughly 25 roster spots available, as they just have 65 players under contract as of now, so it’ll be interesting to see how they fill out the roster after the NFL Draft.
